Fredericton blogger jailed again over disturbance

CBC News - September 15th, 2011

Charles LeBlanc spent Wednesday night in a Saint John jail after being charged with causing a disturbance outside of the Fredericton Police headquarters.

Fredericton Police Const. Rick Mooney confirmed on Thursday morning that LeBlanc was arrested on a charge of causing a disturbance. LeBlanc will have a bail hearing on Sept. 16 at 9:30 a.m.

Mooney said the police received several noise complaints against LeBlanc. The blogger appeared before a Provincial Court judge on Wednesday and was sent to the Saint John jail.

Open letter sent to Fredericton city council on the Unconstitutional arrest of blogger Charles Leblanc.

The arrest of Charles Leblanc yesterday for expressing his opinion freely in the downtown area of Fredericton is a shameful act that needs to be addressed immediately by city council.

If the city of Fredericton representatives either approve of this action or sit by and let it occur on their time and the taxpayer's dollar, it will represent one of the greatest stains on the reputation of a supposedly open and liberal capital city that I can remember in recent years.

I hope that those elected to uphold legal (i.e. constitutional) and other obligations towards human rights will act soon to harness in a police force that becomes more militarized, aggressive and ineffective as time goes by. That city council felt so afraid of biker gangs moving in that they were cowed into buying contaminated strip clubs surely indicates that a blogger with a blow-horn in the least of the problems needing addressing by peace officers.

If an annoying protester is the price Fredericton has to pay to uphold the principles of democracy and freedom, then it is a small price indeed. The brutal and illegal way the Fredericton police force has acted in this instance should be a wake up call to all of you to act on Charles' and all citizen's with consciousness' behalf.

(FULLERTON, Calif.) - Having grown up in Southern California, I have always been well aware of the brutality police officers are capable of. There are many evil horrendous cases of unaddressed police abuse in this country, but some, like the case of Kelly Thomas, the schizophrenic man recently tortured and beaten to death in Fullerton, California remind us that this police abuse is taking place right under our nose.

"I now regret ever having served as a law officer". Those are the words of Kelly Thomas's father, Ron Thomas, who is retired law enforcement. He now spends his time passing out flyers seeking information on the police who killed his son in an open neighborhood while the 37-year old victim screamed "dad" over and over again in vain.

Neighbors said Kelly was childlike and totally harmless. Regardless, even if he wasn't as innocent as he was, there are many witnesses and they all had matching statements and they are published below. If you visit the site fullertonsfuture.org you can see a transcript of witness descriptions.

Apparently it took investigators three weeks to conduct their first witness interview. This, while the killer gang of cops continue to roam and endanger the streets.

The Hells Angels biker gang was interested in purchasing a Fredericton strip club before the city decided to buy it this week, according to a councillor.

Coun. Stephen Chase, the chairman of the city's development committee, said on Wednesday the police informed city council of the biker gang's interest in the North Star Sports Bar.

"They may already own property here, they or people like them, may already own property. But to carry out the kinds of activities they might have carried out in this location that is something we can control," Chase said.

The city councillor said the police highlighted the potential sale to the biker gang as a "potential problem."

The North Star Sports Bar was assessed at $364,900 by Service New Brunswick, but the city is paying $500,000 for the bar and some additional property.

Chase said city staff are confident the property, which currently generates $7,000 in tax revenue, can be flipped to a new developer "in the very near future."

It is July 1995 in Srebrenica, Bosnia. The Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic is shouting at the Dutch commander Thom Karremans. “Don’t tell me nonsense,” bawls Mladic, through an interpreter. “Answer my questions! Did you give orders to fire at my troops?” The moustachioed Karremans is rubbing his face slowly. He looks like a man trapped in a nightmare. “I gave the order to defend themself,” he said.

In video footage recorded by a Serbian cameraman at the time – the authenticity of which is not disputed – Mladic puffs his cigarette. He leans in. He knows exactly what he is doing. Placing his hand on the wall behind Karremans, he says: “You are here to help the Muslims and the Croats.” Karremans looks exhausted. He rubs his eyes, and mumbles something about a piano. “I’m sorry?” asks the interpreter. Karremans elucidates: “I am a piano player. Don’t shoot the piano player.”

Mladic shouts: “You are a poor piano player. Are you a married man, do you have children?” Nobody could miss the implicit threat.

Instead of shooting the piano player, Mladic’s soldiers shot about 8,000 Muslim men whom the Dutch were meant to be protecting. On Monday Mladic’s trial finally gets going in The Hague. His massacre is above all a Bosnian trauma. In time it will presumably become a Serb trauma. However, it’s also a Dutch trauma. Mladic found the country’s eternal weak spot.

On the same day that President Obama and his advisors declared that the United States is "on track" in Afghanistan, hundreds of anti-war protesters gathered outside the White House to voice their dissent.

Among the protesters was Daniel Ellsberg, the former military analyst who in 1971 leaked the Pentagon's secret history of the Vietnam War to the press. At the rally today he spoke in support of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and Bradley Manning, the Army private suspected of leaking U.S. documents, for shining a light on U.S. policy and actions in Afghanistan.

"I think they provided a very valuable service. To call them terrorists is not only mistaken, it's absurd."

Ellsberg was later one of dozens arrested for failing to obey police orders to clear a sidewalk by the White House. Ellsberg said it was the 80th time he has been arrested.

According to OregonLive.com, the FBI “thwarted” a terrorist attack on Friday when it arrested Mohamed Osman Mohamud, a 19-year-old Somali-born US citizen who hoped to murder a large number of people by detonating a bomb in Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square moments before the city’s annual tree-lighting ceremony. Sounds good, right?

Well, there’s a bit of a problem. You see, the FBI helped Mohamud plan the bombing and even supplied him with a fake bomb. The attempted bombing never would have happened if the FBI hadn’t held Mohamud’s hand throughout the entire process because he didn’t have the know-how to pull it off without outside help.

On the eve of what is turning out to be a most interesting election, New Brunswick voters are faced with many questions. Which candidate has your interests at heart, who can do the most for your community - who didn't try to sell off billions of public property in a backroom deal?

There are important questions missed in such weighty issues, such as who talks goodest, who wears the hippest threads, and which politicians ooze sexuality like lions and lionesses in heat?

As to the sexiest woman running, there's no real contest. A sassy PC Saint John MLA who started covering politics as a young lass out of Newfoundland back in 1982. Reporting for CTV and CBC, she later entered business and then won office in 1999, serving as Minister of Transportation, Status of Women, Public Safety, Training & Employment Development and Labour and for then as official opposition on many issues. If you vote in Rothesay, consider yourself sexily represented by Margaret-Ann Blaney.

The male candidate I really don't like, not just because of his party - but due to certain decisions and choices he made, including leaving New Brunswick in the lurch after quitting as Attorney General for 'family reasons' and to get back to private practice, supporting NB's new gulag seizure law and making a mockery of the legislature with his pants on the ground video. On the other hand, he does have those California good looks (he was born there), and after serving in the USSA military, some muscles to go along with that dimpled smile. Soon to be living it large off of his flood firing bonus is sexy Fredericton North rep TJ Burke. I can only bring myself to posting a photo of him in better days (before the thieving / selling out) with the gal of any political junkie's dreams.

PS - To all the people considering voting for a third party this election, I have one message: get off the drugs. The only thing I hear people say about not wanting the PCs in power is that Alward is somehow slow or not shiny enough - they've made too many promises or not told enough about what they're going to cut. Maybe so, but splitting the vote and winding up with another 4 years of the Graham mafia in charge is about the last thing New Brunswick needs in this double dip kind of world.

None of the other candidates have anything over on him far as I can tell, and to vote Green or NDP out of reality denial seems a shame. - Dan F.

More than a dozen people attended the first ever meeting of the East Coast Canada Red & Anarchist Action Network. The following document (please supplement this document with "Defining the Red & Anarchist Action Network") was drawn up by participants and used as a basis on which to build further discussion.

Defining the East Coast Canada Red & Anarchist (Action) Network (ECC-RA(A)N)
The following words are an exercise in futility. Since its inception the Red & Anarchist Action Network (RAAN) has suffered from the larger anarcho-cultural need to define and categorize its own existence into various fractions of an unappreciated whole: to condense the experiences of countless participants into a hastily-written summary. In short, to define and self-define according to the pre-existing formula of ostensibly insurrectionary activity (in both "organizational" and "anti-organizational" forms). This page seeks to counter these distortions by presenting different viewpoints as to the essential nature of the East Coast Canada Red & Anarchist (Action) Network (ECC-RA(A)N), perhaps at the risk of being confusing in the sense of not offering a single pre-defined box in which to fit the network.

We are excited by the resurgence of the RAAN-hub and expect the network to grow in influence in direct proportion to the amount of energy each unique individual brings to the project. However, we feel the need to define ourselves as a distinct network with its own context and its own interpretation of the RAAN founding documents; our locationality provides us with the ability to highlight and elaborate some of the lesser defined notions which were originally brought to the fore by the main RAAN organizing efforts. Our context is the following: something is brewing in the east coast. As countless anti-authoritarian groups split ways we are faced with a growing population of hopeless comrades, but we do not see this as an indication of defeat: it is an indication of potential. Battle lines are slowly being drawn and we are coming to recognize that our enemies are in the most unlikely of places. Comrades are finally beginning to distinguish themselves from the wider authoritarian milieu, older anarchists are growing up and finding friends in other places , and lower-class and homeless anti-authoritarians are being excluded from the larger middle-class scenes. We place an emphasis on good theory but feel the need to act in order to take advantage of the current situation: we have written "action" under erasure in the title of our network because we believe that it is impossible to dissociate it from the implications of thought and, as a young network, we are in the process of thought. We have universally agreed that the important questions for us are among the following:

1) What is the problem of the anti-authoritarian milieu in Eastern Canada?
2) What is the relationship of the ECC-RAAN to the larger RAAN network?
3) How can we overcome the problems of meetings?
4) What is our relationship with the rest of the Left?
5) How can we maintain an anti-authoritarian base network?

We have only begun to discuss these questions. Beneath each question we have found only more questions. However, we have all converged on the basis of our understanding that there is a crisis of anti-authoritarianism in the east-coast; we have identified the following problems which we hope to further articulate in the future:

1) Centrally Planned Committees; we have identified at least three "linchpins" for the radical milieu in eastern canada. That is, radical culture appears to conglomerate around these three central nodes. We believe that these distinctive activist organizations act as hegemonic blocs and operate with more power than they deserve. We believe them to be a hindrance to anti-authoritarian organizing and we would like to explore tactics for overcoming this problem.

2) Scenesterism; Scenes are a hotspot for gossip, the construction of trends, and the building of social capital. Scene culture in Halifax and Fredericton, in particular, drains our radical potential. We must find ways to erase the scene or to have it play a much less significant part in our everyday lives.

3) Mutual Aid/Diversity of Tactics; There is a strong misunderstanding as to what mutual aid means in the east coast. Activists/Scenesters have used doublespeak to convert the meaning of these concepts into an embrace of purely authoritarian projects with nonreciprocating support. At the same time anti-authoritarians are not being offered any hospitality because of petty ideological differences. We will either retain and defend these two notions or build something new and more nuanced in its place.

4) Isolationism; potential comrades are being excluded from scenes, cliques, and middle-class activist projects. These folks have always been willing to join our struggle and yet we have overlooked them, and we will continue to overlook them. We will find new ways to network with the most isolated comrades in eastern canada.

This list is only a brainstorm. We hope to encourage action but also good theory and we hope that our social form will manifest itself as a "reflective anti-authoritarian network" (or, "an organized contradiction"), that is, as a network that anti-authoritarians can see themselves within. We hope to combat all forms of sectarianism, activism, scenesterism, *as well as* the external policing of our desires by any number of political and social institutions. We will support all comrades in struggle.

Protest leads to arrest at state fair

PALMER — A 52-year-old Palmer man who was arrested while protesting at the Alaska State Fair has become a minor YouTube celebrity in the Valley.

Sidney Hill is familiar to local residents as the gentleman who spends most of his days on the corner of the Palmer-Wasilla and Glenn highways with his large “Impeach Obama” sign. When he brought that banner to the first day of the fair, he drew a crowd.

An altercation with fair security, caught on a more than nine-minute video and posted on YouTube, led to his arrest on charges of fourth-degree assault, disorderly conduct and trespassing, said Cmdr. Tom Remaley of the Palmer Police Department. The video has also sparked criticism that state fair security personnel used excessive force in detaining Hill.

From watching the video, Remaley said he doesn’t feel the force used was excessive.

“I don’t know why security wanted him to leave, but he was yelling that he had his right to free speech,” Remaley said. “He also had a handgun on him, and they took him into custody. There were trying to get him on the ground and felt the gun.”

That’s when it appears fair security went from trying to escort Hill from the fairgrounds to taking him to the ground, Remaley said.

Yesterday was the Lemonade Revolt - a community response to this girl being shut down by health inspectors last month:

In the end, the girl got a trip to Disney land - so, no harm done. In fact, this girl's story wrapped up really well in a sweet American package: lemonade stand : bureaucracy : outrage : Disneyland!

The "Lemonade Revolt" was created by one of the local anarchists, who witnessed the girl being shut down in July. The anarchist himself was a father of youngsters (his boy helped me squeeze some lemonade at one point, totally fucking adorable).

I set up on Alberta St, between 25th and 26th at 11:40am. I purchased about $80 worth of lemons and oranges. In total, I made a investment into this event near $150 - but I was able to give out free lemonade all day long. I had two coolers full of ice, and two jugs full of water (one 7-gallon and one 5-gallon) - I was way over prepared. I stole borrowed a table from work, and set up signs for Iraq Veterans Against the War

Brett Bowers put his artwork on display next to my lemonade stand - he's a really good guy and a solid artist. Some anarchists handing out free zines set up on the other side of me. The Anarchists were super-fucking-awesome. I <3 Anarchists.I made lemonade all day. From noon till 9:30, nothing but lemonade, lemonade, lemonade - I squeezed all of the lemonade myself, right there on the street. It was a bitch. I had a chance to talk with some folks, particularly the folks interested in IVAW. Sam Adams came by my booth early in the afternoon, referring to being shut down by health inspectors he said, "[sic] You have nothing to worry about tonight, we'll leave you alone. You're safe." He didn't take any Lemonade. Immediately after he walked away from my booth, some folks corned him and asked why they should move to Portland. Adams was extremely kind - especially considering these douche bags were from California. People from south of Sacramento are not welcome to move to Cascadia. Sam Adams came around my booth again at around 9pm, "I changed my mind on that lemonade" he said, I gave him a copy of War Is A Racket, "Complements of Veterans For Peace".

Peter McFarland of Marin County, Calif. is suing the county sheriff's office for tasing him in his own home while his wife pleaded with them to stop.

The deputies arrived June 29 of last year after McFarland fell outside his home while he and his wife Pearl were returning from a charity fundraiser, and he said something to the effect that if he had a gun, he'd shoot himself in the head.

It was hyperbole, McFarland told the deputies, who arrived after paramedics had already helped him inside. A rare survivor of pancreatic cancer, he considers himself lucky to be alive.

Yet the deputies insisted on taking McFarland to the hospital for psychiatric evaluation, ultimately tasing him after he demanded they leave his house. "Stop resisting!" the deputies repeatedly tell McFarland, as he whimpers and writhes in pain.

McFarland was arrested and jailed on a charge of resisting arrest, but a judge later threw out the charge.

Consider the following therapeutic.

I have been assigned as a staff officer to a headquarters in Afghanistan for about two months. During that time, I have not done anything productive. Fortunately little of substance is really done here, but that is a task we do well.

We are part of the operational arm of the International Security Assistance Force commanded by U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus. It is composed of military representatives from all the NATO countries, several of which I cannot pronounce.

Officially, IJC was founded in late 2009 to coordinate operations among all the regional commands in Afghanistan. More likely it was founded to provide some general a three-star command. Starting with a small group of dedicated and intelligent officers, IJC has successfully grown into a stove-piped and bloated organization, top-heavy in rank. Around here you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a colonel.

Irving refinery dust a 'nuisance' only: official

An Irving Oil official says there shouldn't be any health concerns about an incident at the refinery that left several homes and cars in east Saint John covered with a grey residue Friday morning.

Dale Cooper, the refinery's processing manager, said the material is a catalyst made from clay and silica compounds.

It was released during the startup of a processing unit Thursday evening. Cooper said it's normal to have some material escape but the large amount this time was unusual.

It's still unclear how much was released, but at least three Saint John neighbourhoods had cars and homes covered in grey, gritty dust, including some several kilometres away, down Loch Lomond Road.

DENVER - It has been one month since a homeless pastor died while in custody at the new Denver Jail. On Tuesday, his family walked through the front doors of the Detention Center, hoping to find answers into Marvin Booker's death.

With tears on their cheeks the victim's father, mother, two brothers and sister stood on the steps of the jail. When they asked to visit the facility where Marvin died, the family was turned away.

"All we wanted to do was to walk the last walk of our loved one's life," said Spenser Booker, the victim's youngest brother.

The family was taken inside a conference room this afternoon and told they were not allowed inside the jail or to watch the surveillance video of the moments before he died.

"We've asked only to see the tape. Let us see the video. Let us see what happened," says Spenser Booker.

"Leaders of the world's most powerful countries -- allies or adversaries, with the exception of Israel -- would agree with me and urge President Obama to avoid the aggression," said Castro.

If President Obama gives the order, "he would be ordering the immediate deaths of hundreds of millions of people, including an untold number of people in his homeland and the crews of all the U.S. fleet in the waters around Iran," Castro said.

Watched this movie last week and it has really stuck with me. Collapse is not your traditional conspiracy doc. A whistle blower by the name of Michael Ruppert was asked to be interviewed for a movie about the CIA's involvement in drug smuggling in South Central L.A. in the 80's. After talking to Ruppert for a little bit and hearing some of his opinions and information they decided they could make a much more interesting movie about that, than drug smuggling.

The main area of discussion is about peak oil and the idea that we have already achieved it. Oil and fossil fuels are in virtually everything (7 gallons of oil in every tire, 800 million cars on the planet) and there is nothing, anywhere in any combination that will replace the edifice built by fossil fuels. The long and the short is, once the oil runs out, which it will in our lifetime the world will face a collapse of monumental proportions. Comparable to the mayan civilization or (if you believe in that sort of thing) the lost city of Atlantis.

The whole movie is just Ruppert sitting in a chair in front of a camera, being interviewed by the director. It is a little depressing, sort of along the same lines of Zeitgeist, however, I liked it better, because Ruppert is a confident speaker and is interesting to listen to. Also he seems a little more credible than many of the other conspiracy doc's and doesn't come across as a crack pot like Alex Jones. Check it out, it can be obtained for free from any torrent site

To a foreigner, the Canadian police are a confusing bunch. With Toronto locked down for the G20 summit, several of them have been cycling around the deserted streets on mountain bikes presenting what we would see as the very picture of community policing. Yet side by side with this benign image is an intimidating, militarised presence that many Canadians feel has been deliberately cultivated in order to undermine their right to protest against the G20 and its damaging impacts.

The security operation on the streets of Toronto has provided Canadians with the greatest single talking point of the G20 gathering this weekend. Many locals are furious at the $1bn price tag for policing a summit which they never wanted to host in the first place. As John Clarke of the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty pointed out, that same money could have paid for five years of the provincial food supplement programme that has just been scrapped in the latest round of austerity cuts.

The high level of militarisation that has been witnessed over the past couple of days has also been a major talking point, as Canadians are not accustomed to seeing such weaponry being so openly paraded at civil demonstrations. One small protest against poverty and homelessness in Toronto itself was quickly surrounded by vast numbers of police in full riot gear, including mounted police. More chilling still was the visible presence of heavily armed officers touting tear gas rifles and other firearms; police have also confirmed firing plastic bullets and pepper spray capsules at demonstrators on Saturday night.

Many Canadians have become suspicious of police tactics since the Quebec police force admitted that it had disguised three of its own officers as rock-wielding anarchists in an attempt to provoke violence at a peaceful protest in the town of Montebello two years ago. Somewhat farcically, the three were exposed as agents provocateurs when they were found to be wearing official issue police boots identical to those of the uniformed officers "arresting" them.

Afghan authorities are announcing the arrest of seven people in last week's car suicide bombing that killed six NATO soldiers, including three American colonels and a Canadian colonel.

Col. Geoff Parker, 42, who had been the commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment, a mechanized unit based at CFB Gagetown, N.B., is the highest-ranking Canadian Forces member to die in Afghanistan.

A total of 18 people were killed in the bombing last Tuesday near the destroyed royal palace.

Intelligence service spokesman Saeed Ansari told reporters Monday that the seven were arrested separately over the last week and were under the command of the Taliban's "shadow governor" of Kabul, Daoud Surkha.

It was the deadliest attack against NATO in Kabul in eight months.

A man who placed a poster of David Cameron containing the word "wanker" in his window has described how police handcuffed him in his home on election day, threatened him with arrest, and forcibly removed what they said was offensive campaign literature.

David Hoffman, 63, said police went "completely over the top" when they visited his home in Bow, east London, and demanded he take down the poster, which had been fixed to his window for weeks.

After he expressed concern at his treatment, Hoffman says, a local inspector told him over the phone that "any reasonable person" would find his poster "alarming, harassing or distressful". The visit from police followed a complaint from a neighbour, who told Hoffman she found the poster offensive. The word "wanker" was printed beneath a photograph of a smiling Cameron.

Hoffman said four officers knocked on his door on polling day. When asked by them for identification, he said he tried to momentarily close the door. The officers then forced the door open, he said.

The 23-year-old, who is accused of throwing a grenade that killed a U.S. army medic in Afghanistan in 2002, said his prison guards were intimidating him and tried to humiliate him during body searches.

"He believes it comes too close to his genitalia in the way it's being done," Khadr lawyer Barry Coburn said, according to the Reuters news agency.

Khadr said he would only show up when he was treated with respect, but U.S. army Col. Patrick Parrish, who is presiding over the proceedings, said he wouldn't let an accused dictate tribunal procedure. Parrish ordered the hearing to continue without Khadr.

On Thursday morning, Khadr refused to attend his pretrial hearing because prison guards demanded he put on blackout goggles and earmuffs for the van ride to the court. The guards at the U.S. naval base in Cuba wanted to prevent him from seeing and hearing anything while he was being transported, something Khadr's lawyer said he had never been required to do before.

A clear majority of younger Canadians say they would not have volunteered in 1939 to help liberate Europe and defeat Nazism, according to the poll.

The survey, provided exclusively to The Canadian Press, shows a significant divide between older Canadians and those aged 18 to 35 when it comes to assessing Victory in Europe Day, 65 years after the end of the most significant human conflagration of the past century.

The poll, which comes as Prime Minister Stephen Harper attends a ceremony Thursday celebrating the liberation of Holland at a cemetery near the Netherlands-Belgium border, is in some ways paradoxical.

Veteran MLAs to get $42,500 bonuses On top of generous pensions

Veteran New Brunswick MLAs who qualify for a pension will also get lump sum bonuses of $42,500 each if they leave office this summer under pay and benefit changes they quietly voted themselves two years ago, CBC News has learned.

"They already get generous pay and generous pension plans, so to layer on top of the cake more icing of generous severance packages just adds insult to injury," said Kevin Gaudet, of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

New Brunswick introduced limited severance packages called re-establishment allowances in the mid 1990s for MLAs who lost their seats before reaching the eight years required to qualify for an MLA pension.

The money was meant to help ease former members back into the workforce and paid a maximum of $27,000.

But in 2008, current MLAs voted to increase the maximum payment to $42,500 and to make the allowances available to everyone - even politicians who quit or retire on a full pension.

A New Brunswick judge has denied claims he recommended that MLAs should increase severance packages for retiring legislature members.

CBC News reported two weeks ago that a number of MLAs leaving office this year would get up to $42,000 in severance payments.

Loredana Catalli Sonier, the clerk of the legislature, said a 2007 commission on MLA compensation headed by Mr. Justice Patrick Ryan recommended the re-establishment payments.

But on Wednesday, Ryan said that was not the case.

The report said, "the purpose of a re-establishment payment is to financially aid a former member to re-enter the workforce," not to retire, he pointed out.

On May 4, 1970, at Kent State University, in the city of Kent, Ohio, members of the Ohio National Guard fired 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis. These were unarmed college students who were exercising their constitutional rights to speak their mind, to demonstrate peacefully, and to protest openly against the then recent incursion by US combat forces into Cambodia.

Richard Nixon had been elected President in 1968. He promised to end the Vietnam War. Instead of doing so, he was part of the cover-up of the My Lai massacre and freed Lt. Calley, stating that Calley had "served enough time." The premeditated murder of over 500 unarmed civilians, many of whom were elderly, women and children was hushed up by our government - the murderer himself freed after serving only 1 day at the Ft. Leavenworth prison and transferred to serve house arrest upon orders given by Nixon.

On December 1st, 1969, the Selective Service of the US held a lottery to determine the order of draft into the Army for the Vietnam War. This was the first draft lottery instituted since World War II.

But, boys, don't get any ideas. I have two words for you — predator drones. You will never see it coming. You think I'm joking.”

And he spared no one, not even himself: “It's been quite a year since I've spoken here last— lots of ups, lots of downs — except for my approval ratings, which have just gone down. But that's politics. It doesn't bother me. Beside I happen to know that my approval ratings are still very high in the country of my birth”.

Arrests during May Day rallies

Several dozen people were arrested during clashes with police during May Day rallies in Rotterdam and Nijmegen on Saturday, news agency ANP reports.

A small rally of 'anti-capitalists' in Nijmegen ended in a battle with riot police as demonstrators threw stones and bottles.

And in Rotterdam, 14 demonstrators were arrested when police tried to confiscate sticks from a number of people. Demonstrators said the sticks were to be used to carry banners.

One Arrest On Second Day of G8 Protests

Protesters gathered this morning to demonstrate against the first day of the G8 development ministers' meeting in Halifax. A picket began in front of the Westin Hotel at around 7 a.m., then proceeded down to the Pier 21, behind the Westin. As police officers watched, protesters chanted, waved signs, and handed out flyers.

During the protest, Toni MacAfee, from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, was arrested and later charged. Jane Kirby, one of the protesters, said MacAfee was "taken down and arrested agressively by three officers, shortly after we were all corraled from the street to the sidewalk by cops. As far as I could tell, her crime was no worse than stepping off the sidewalk or possibly spilling her coffee."

UPDATE: 12:30 p.m. Tony Tracy, from the Canadian Labour Congress, said that MacAfee "has an arraignment hearing at 1:30pm today. Her lawyer (David Roberts from the labour law firm Pink Larkin) will be in attendance at the arraignment hearing. We expect that Toni will be released shortly after arraignment."

More than 70 per cent of high school students in Bathurst plan to leave the region after they graduate, according to a new survey.

The students feel there aren't enough educational opportunities, high-paying jobs or activities to keep them home, the survey by the Multicultural Association Chaleur Region Inc. found.

"My heart's in Bathurst," said Philippe McDonald, a Grade 12 student at École Secondaire Népisiguit.

But he's one of the students planning to leave.
