Supporters of liquefied natural gas projects in Passamaquoddy Bay just do not get it, St. Andrews Mayor John D. Craig said.
St. Andrews by the Sea is one of New Brunswick’s most popular tourist destinations.
Supertankers could safely navigate Head Harbour Passage between Deer Island and Campobello Island into the bay, the United States Coast Guard said last week.
"The eventual involvement and co-operation of Canada's maritime, environmental, and public safety authorities are paramount to ensure the safety and security of the waterway," the U.S. Coast Guard report states.
Canada will neither involve itself nor co-operate, Craig insisted, echoing the sentiments that New Brunswick Southwest MP Greg Thompson, minister of Veterans Affairs, expressed earlier in the week.
"What these American companies have to do is wrap their heads around that Head Harbour Passage is Canadian sovereign waters. Our prime minister has stated very clearly to the president of the United States of America that as a country we will not allow supertankers through Head Harbour Passage," Craig said.
